English 10
Description of Course:
English 10 will continue to develop the concepts learned in English 9 through the study of literature. Students will continue to develop oral and written communication skills. They will be expected to use critical thinking skills and to continue developing knowledge of grammar, usage, mechanics, vocabulary, and spelling.
Course Competences: (focusing on the Common Core for Language Arts):
After completing English 10, students should be able to
- Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts for key ideas and details.
- Read and analyze complex literary and informational texts for key ideas and details.
- Write effectively using different types of texts appropriate to purpose and audience.
- Use the writing process to produce and publish clear and coherent pieces of writing.
- Demonstrate command and control of the conventions of standard English when writing or speaking.
- Determine and apply the meaning of words and phrases.
- Initiate, integrate, and evaluate the exchange of information, and present information through strategic use and appropriate means.

Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird.
Rose, Reginald. Twelve Angry Men.
Shakespeare, William. Macbeth.
Literature Circle texts may include: Catcher in the Rye, Secret Life of Bees, A Separate Peace, The Absolute True Diary of an American Indian, etc.
Texts will be supplemented with short stories, poetry, nonfiction, and reference books at the teacher’s discretion.
